    Are you sure that the gap was there to allow some air flow to the fridge?

    Yes I thought of that but there are two vents at the back of the fridge and the gap looked more like a misplaced afterthought so I don't think it will have any bearing on the function of the fridge.

    If it does it takes only a second to rectify.
